Robert’s Top 10 Movies of Summer

Yeah, that’s right, I’m going there already. I’m going to predict for you to the Top 10 movies of 2007 right now. Ok, well between May 24th and August 31st, the Summer Season. I’m excluding Shrek 3 and Spiderman 3 because they’re already out and this a prediction thing.

I’m going to run the gamut here, I’m going to put “tent pole” films on the same list as the long shots. Some of these movies on the list will surprise you in two ways. One, I picked them over whatever crap you thought was going to be great and two because when you see them, you’ll realize I was right. Here we go, in order.

10. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix I don’t really watch these, but this movie is guaranteed to be a hit, so whatever, the 10 spot is a freebie.
9. Live Free or Die Hard A tough choice here. It looks like a good action movie. John McClane is an awesome character. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is hot. Timothy Olyphant is awesome. My only concern is this the McClane we love and know? It looks more over the top than it’s ever been, but that might turn out to be a good thing. Put your ass in the seat for this one and enjoy the ride.
8. I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry Jessica Biel nearly naked and wet and Adam Sandler returning to goofy comedy. There is a lot of comedic heat this summer, but I feel confident on this bad boy.
7. Rescue Dawn A tough pick to place because it’s probably going to get stuck with a limited release, though this Christian Bale Vietnam era thriller, helmed by Werner Herzog, will be good. Why? Christian Bale is in it. Nuff said.
6. The Bourne Ultimatum In the final Matt Damon starring Bourne film there is guaranteed to be some real action. No wires, well some wires, no CGI, just dudes crashing cars and busting faces. Strap in for good, old fashioned ass kicking, something needed in the endless area of dream-toys made on a computer (I’m looking at you, Spiderman 3 and Transformers).
5. Knocked Up Early word is this is super. At times a potty comedy with moments of real maturity, this will be a surefire hit. ‘Nuff said.
4. Halloween Surprised? Rob Zombie’s take on the immortal classic will own your soul. Zombie is a man who understand and appreciates the genre and his skill has grown considerably with each outing. He is one of the fewer directors that actually gets better from film to film rather than just moving on. House of 1000 Corpses was interesting, though had a lot of shortfalls. The Devil’s Reject corrected everything that was wrong and was awesome, though the introduction was heavy handed in its obligatory foul language. Mark the Calendar because on August 31st he comes home (again…for the first time).
3. The Simpsons Movie No one knows this has to be good more than the folks at Fox. It has been a loooooong time in coming and the pressure is on. I’m sure it will deliver and The Simpsons will kick tail. Writing on the show has been increasingly improved over the past few seasons and the movie will benefit from this fresh thinking.
2. Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End This one barely makes the list in time as it is probably already out as you read this. This will probably break a lot of box office records and it will probably divide audiences into several camps - loved it, liked it, thought it was the worst of the 3 but good. You can’t stop Johnny Depp or any of the pirates and the effects look mind-blowing. Expect this to rock your ass.
1. Transformers No doubt in my mind. This will be the most amazing movie of the summer. It looks like it has all the requisites - action, hot girls, huge damn robots. If you’re not excited for this movie, you don’t have a pulse. It won’t be the biggest money maker, but it will be the biggest crowd pleaser.
