‘Teen Titans’ Leap to Big Screen

The Teen Titans are graduating to the big screen with a live-action adaptation.

Warner Bros. Pictures is planning a big-screen live-action adaptation of the DC Comics series Teen Titans, the junior superhero team made up of popular sidekicks, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The tone of the movie will be consistent with other recent Warners’ comic book ventures Batman Begins, Superman Returns, and the upcoming Watchmen, according to Akiva Goldsman, who along with Kerry Foster is producing the Titans film through their Weed Road banner.

Comic book writer/creator Mark Verheiden, who wrote Timecop and The Mask and served as writer-producer on TV’s Smallville, will pen the Titans script. Verheiden is also a writer-producer for SciFi Channel’s Battlestar Galactica.

Teen Titans, which first appeared in print in the early 1960s as a junior Justice League, originally consisted of Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Wonder Girl, and Speedy, the respective young sidekicks of A-list heroes Batman, Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Green Arrow. In the 1980s, the series was successfully relaunched with the creative team of writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez, who aged the characters to young adulthood facing more mature themes. This run also saw the addition of original non-sidekick superheros Cyborg, Starfire, and Raven.

The Titans had success on the small screen with a Cartoon Network series that ran from 2003-06 that featured many of the heroes and storylines from the 1980’s comic book run.

While it’s not yet know which characters will appear in the movie, Nightwing — the role Robin matured into — is said to be in the mix.
